Meet the Artist
Jack Evil (they/them)
My name is Jack. I’m a transmasculine nonbinary crochet artist currently based in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, though I’m originally from Georgia. My queer identity is a huge part of the work I make, and building community centered on trans people occupies almost as much of my time as crafting does.
I’ve had an interest in fiber arts since childhood. Sewing was my first favorite—a tool for making my own clothes and furniture for my small collection of dolls. In high school, I started knitting, though I never managed to get very far with it. Scarves may seem like an easy first project, but they weren’t nearly exciting enough to spark any real passion.
For Christmas 2018, my wife gifted me my first set of crochet hooks. I’d been interested in trying crochet for a while, but never gotten around to figuring out what tools I needed. It took a little time for the crochet bug to fully bite—we all have to pay our weirdly-shaped rectangle and poorly-fitting hat dues—but these days it’s pretty much the only thing I want to do.
Outside of crochet, I also have some formal art education. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking and have received awards for my work as a visual artist. I also love to write, so I hope you’ll check out my blog where you can find more information about me, my experiences as an artist, and my plans for the future!
